The truth? We probably could, maybe even should, but here’s why we don’t:

Most of our litters aren’t done casually in a backyard. They involve high-cost, professional-level breeding practices like surgical insemination, frozen semen from old studs we purchased years ago whom are no longer alive, and multi-day progesterone tracking to ensure proper breeding timing. Add in costs like storing the semen for the last years, shipping semen, whelping supplies, ultrasound, C-sections, and more and that total adds up very quickly with many of our breedings costing us on average $8,000 up to $20,000 just to make the breeding happen not including all the time it took planning and investing years ahead and that’s before a single pup is even born. Not to mention some breeding dont take, we’ve experienced losses of $20,000 for one breeding that never took, a hard reality many don’t see behind the scenes.

Yet we still price our dogs very fairly, with proper rates especially for families looking for pets. Heck, breeders using similar lines were charging what we charge now over 12 years ago, even though their breeding costs were far lower than ours today and our lines are more perfected and consistent now than they were back then, which technically adds even more value.

But again we keep our pricing fair not because our dogs are worth less now, but because we care more about where they go, how they are going to be raises than what we could get for them. It was never about the dogs being less in quality. In fact, many of our pet homes have some of the most stunning pups we’ve ever produced. There are far too many dogs being produced year after year with poor health — to the point of damaging the reputation of entire breeds. Some may say it’s due to bad genetics, but in reality, it all comes down to improper breeding and incorrectly whelping litters.

In this blog, we want to share some basic knowledge we’ve gained over the years — in hopes that it leads to more healthy litters and better outcomes for dogs and families alike.

Many people think breeding and raising puppies is easy. Just throw two dogs in the backyard, let them mate, stick the pups with mom in a box or room, provide some water, dump food in a big bowl, and find them homes, right? Wrong.

When done properly, breeding is far from easy — and how those pups are whelped, raised, and nourished in their first weeks of life determines their long-term health and ability to thrive as stable companions or working dogs.

Breeder ≠ Quality Without Research

Too often, consumers looking for a dog come across a breeder, assume they’re getting quality just because there’s a price tag, and place all their trust in that person. They pay thousands of dollars expecting a top-tier dog — when in reality, they could’ve gotten the same poor-quality pup for free off Craigslist, from a friend, or even at a shelter. It all comes down to a lack of research. Bringing unhealthy puppies into this world is heartbreaking — not just for the dogs, but for the people who buy them. Those families end up with broken hearts and drained bank accounts from constant vet visits.

Many breeders (in all breeds) will hype up a pedigree — "the best bloodline this," "the hottest line that." But what does that actually mean? Absolutely nothing — if they lack the knowledge and experience to back it up.

You can spend thousands on breeding stock and still have health issues if you don’t know how to properly structure a breeding or raise the litter right. In fact, the first 12 months of a dog’s life are the most critical. The breeder controls the first 8 weeks — the buyer takes over the next 10 months.

Yes, Health Issues Can Still Happen — But Here’s Why

Can two well-bred dogs from the same bloodline still produce pups with health issues?
Yes. Why? Because even with great genetics, it's all about how the litter is raised.

With a well-bred line, you’re already miles ahead — but if the litter isn’t whelped properly, problems can still develop.

It starts with nutrition:
- Puppies must consume colostrum from the dam within 24 hours — this jumpstarts their immune system.
- As they wean, they must receive proper calories, fats, and proteins to support growth.
- A clean environment is essential. So is space to move and emotional attention for healthy brain development.

Feeding raw diets before 12 months is NOT recommended. Neither is loading puppies up with every supplement trending online.

Why?
Because giving certain things too young can cause internal developmental issues — affecting organs, liver, kidneys, joints, vision, coat, and brain function. These aren’t things you can easily test or see at such a young age — so you must trust your breeder.

How to Point Out a Reputable Breeder

Research: look at the breeders profiles not just a breeder page but personal pages, look how they live personally, do they post family photos, are they clean, do they care and take care of them selfs, do they post family stuff or just nice expensive things to show off? Why is all this important? It can help determine how well the breeder takes care of their animals or if they are just all about sales.

Dogs well-being: Look how the dogs are being raised, are the dogs in kennels all the time? This is easily noticed by kennel sores on their elbows, paws, balding tails and have long nails. Do the dogs get along with one another? Are their dog bowls clean, are they drinking out of clean water bowls or nasty buckets? Are the dogs raised and sleep outside in dirt and mud all day long or raised inside? How do sure their coats look are they always dirty with bald spots, allergies issues or do they have nice shiny coats all the time?

Pedigree: How consistent is the bloodlines behind the dog(s)? This can be sometimes difficult for some to figure out. The more consistent the pedigree is behind the dog(s) the more purebred the dog will be, the healthier the dog will be and the least genetic problems will develop. How do you read pedigrees? Well, look for the same bloodlines within ones pedigree at least 3 generations back of consistency is what you want, the further back with the same bloodlines the better. What’s a bloodline? A bloodline to make it most simple is basically the producers name of the kennel that goes in front of the dogs name, the more times you see this name the more consistent the pedigree is. Now sometimes it can be confusing as the way this works is when a breeder produces a litter, one buys a pup from that breeder and breeds that dog when grown to another dog from the same breeder those offsprings are now that breeders productions so they get credit of their kennel name before the dogs name. When doing your research look at each dog and where it originated from as some dogs like said above can have a different kennel name in-front but actually is the same bloodline. Most importantly look for scattered bloodlines behind the parents, the more scattered the more genetic variation of health issues will occur means lots of expensive vet bills, less years of life of the dog and so forth this is why pedigrees are so important.

DNA genetic profiling: Is the parents of the puppy you’re interested in DNA profiled? Meaning is the mom and dad of the offspring actually who the breeder says they are? DNA profiling is a process done through a dog registry like UKC who sends a DNA sample from both parents to a lab like UC Davis. This DNA testing profiles the dog’s genetic chromosomes which tells us the offsprings from the said Dam and Sire are proven to be from them both. Why is this important? Because many breeders hang papers. What’s hanging papers? This is when one breeds a desired Stud to a Dam to add color, size, bone, etc this happens very often in all breeds and most the time is a completely different breed of the other dog being bred, the breeding is then promoted using a different said stud whom they say is the father but isn’t. Sadly theirs no way to find out who the true father is if they have not been DNA profiled. This is very important for the over all longevity health of the offspring(s) and for you to not spend your hard earned money.

DNA health testing: This is also very important tool especially for breeders to know if the dog has any genetic health concerns. Any dog with 2 copies of a trait should not be bred to another dog whom has 1+ copies of that same trait. More than 2 copies of a trait makes it dominant and it will pass over to the offsprings. What’s a good health testing lab to use? Social media marketing: Is the breeder you’re interested in getting a pup from open to allowing you to see the dogs in person? Do they post videos or just photos? This is all important factors as there are many scammers out there with amazing photoshop skills who don’t want you to see the dogs in person for multiple reason like high rears, splayed feet, easty / westy, under / over bites, scars, poor coats and so forth. The quote don’t believe everything you see on tv goes for breeders as well, many breeders not only are amazing with camera tricks but also use famous people to real in your attention. Remember to use all above factors when looking for your future furry friend.

Red Flags: Be cautious if a breeder always has puppies available or is willing to sell multiple breeds. No pressure to Buy, a reputable breeder will never rush you into purchasing a puppy. They want to ensure their puppies are going to the right homes and will often ask you questions to determine if you’re a suitable match to purchase a puppy from them.

Sadly the breeding industry with all breed types is all over the place, lots of hype, false advertisement, poor quality breedings and many scammers. We want to help future dog owners on what to look for before making a long term commitment and purchase.

At Sin City Pits, we’re constantly evolving our breeding program with both science and structure in mind. One of the most strategic steps we’ve taken — and something we’ve been planning for years — is the use of dual sire litters. Now that we’ve established a strong foundation and produced enough offspring across generations, we’ll be implementing this method more frequently going forward. But what is a dual sire litter — and how does it benefit you as the buyer, as well as us as a program?

�� What Is a Dual Sire Litter?

A dual sire litter is exactly what it sounds like: two different males (sires) bred to the same female (dam) during a single heat cycle.

Using this method, we can produce two genetically distinct sets of puppies in one litter, with confirmed paternity verified through DNA profiling after birth.

It’s a highly calculated process backed by veterinary science, and one we’ve studied extensively in consultation with reproductive specialists, UC Davis Laboratories, and UKC-approved experts.

✅ Why Use Two Sires?

There are several key reasons why dual sire litters are incredibly beneficial — both for responsible breeders and for serious puppy buyers looking for bloodline exclusivity, genetic diversity, or long-term breeding potential.

Here’s how this strategy pays off:

�� Maximizes Genetic Opportunity

Two sires = more variety in one litter. This is useful when testing the potential of an up-and-coming stud or preserving frozen semen from a legacy male.

In a perfect 10-pup litter, you may get five pups from one sire and five from the other — meaning fewer direct siblings and more controlled pairings for future generations, that is though in a perfect world scenario, you can also get one from a sire and 9 from the another sire or even zero from one sire.

�� No Risk to the Dam

Contrary to myths, this does not increase litter size unnaturally, and it is completely safe for the dam. The whelping process remains the exact same.

Performing fewer breedings with two in one reduces the number of surgical inseminations means:

Fewer C-sections
Less physical stress on the dam
Better long-term reproductive health

�� How Do We Know Which Puppy Belongs to Which Sire?

Great question — and here’s where modern science plays a key role.

Before a dual sire litter can be performed:

Both sires and the dam must be DNA profiled at least 12 weeks before breeding

At Sin City Pits, all our studs and females are DNA profiled through the UKC (United Kennel Club) using UC Davis Laboratories

Once the puppies are born, we:

Collect DNA samples from each pup (typically on day 6-7, though as early as day 3 is possible)
Submit those samples for parentage verification
Within 8-12 weeks, receive clear documentation showing which pup came from which sire

The Difference Between XL Bully vs. XL Pitbull — And Why Sin City Pits Now Calls Them American Terriers

You’ve probably heard the terms XL or XXL tossed around in the dog world — especially when talking about Pitbulls or Bullies over the last decade plus. But what do these size labels really mean? Are they based on weight, height, or just hype?

At Sin City Pits, we want to clear up the confusion — because we’ve been part of the evolution that’s taken these dogs from what was once known as an XL Pitbulls, to American Bullies and we've transformed it into something far more consistent: the American Terrier.

�� SO What Does XL or XXL Actually Mean?

The term XL simply refers to a taller version of the original breed type — whether Pitbull, Poodle or a Bully. It doesn’t mean it’s stronger, more capable, or even better bred. It just means bigger in height! An XL Pitbull is a taller version of the American Pitbull Terrier. An XL Bully is a taller version of the American Bully and there’s no universal standard — each registry (UKC , ABKC , etc.) has slightly different guidelines for height, some changing it as the breeds change. But at Sin City Pits, we consistently produce dogs with structure and function, including:

Females: 22–24” TTW (top of withers)
Males: 23–26” TTW

That’s where form meets function — not just size for the sake of size.

�� Bully vs. Pitbull — The Real Differences

This should be simple, but the dog world especially on forums often makes it confusing — also when people are chasing size or looks over structure and lineage. Here's how we explain it:

Bully Dogs (XL Bully):

Thick, heavy-set structure
Looser skin around the neck and jaw
Typically have broader features and shorter muzzles
Inconsistent traits from dog to dog and line to line

Pitbull Dogs (XL Pitbull):

Athletic, lean muscle structure
Tight skin
More defined, dominant headpiece
Consistent working-dog build with a purpose-driven look

Now — if you add height to either of those, that’s when people start labeling them XL.

What most people call XL Pitbulls, we now define and breed as the American Terrier.

Because the term "XL Pitbull" has become watered down — often misused, mismatched, and associated with dogs that no longer reflect the structure, capability, or temperament of the American Pitbull Terrier and as the American Bully.
